I want to try this out with my driver education unit this year! what was the software they used with Powerpoint to record presentations? Was it free or purchased?

There are many Apps and software that are free and can do what you want. There are also many that have a small fee that will add features.
Free Apps: Educreations, Screen Chomp, Screen-o-Matic (web-based). All these are interactive whiteboard apps that can record what it is you are doing as the instructor.

Fee Based App: Explain Everything (best one I have used) – You can import powerpoints and edit on them as you record yourself talking.
